A 70-year-old elderly man was found unconscious beside his wife, 67, who was in a state of decomposition in a rental unit at Block 93, Henderson Road on the morning of 29 July 2023 - the man was conveyed to Singapore General Hospital.

It was believed that the elderly woman had been dead for more than a week.

The man and woman, who are wheelchair-bound, according to neighbours, are believed to an ethnic Malay couple.

Mr Koh, 60, a cooked food stall assistant, told Shin Min Daily News that he detected a foul smell along the corridor on the ninth storey about a week ago. The smell grew increasingly pungent since then, and on the morning of 29 July 2023, it became unbearable and that prompted him to contact the police.

When he knocked on the door of his neighbour, which opened after he nudged it lightly, Mr Koh saw that the floor of the said unit was covered with maggots.

Another neighbour named Lina, 58, a cashier, said that she had not seen the couple going downstairs for breakfast in days. Seeing that the front porch of her unit was unattended to, she was of the impression that the elderly woman might have returned to her in-law’s home in Johor and thought nothing of it.

John, 69, a neighbour, who lives on the tenth storey, told Shin Min that the couple was friendly towards others, and the deceased lady would also help to take care of his wife, who is a stroke patient, during her free time.

According to other neighbours interviewed by Shin Min, besides the usual bickering, the couple generally had a good relationship and were often seen going out together. The elderly man was also believed to have undergone an operation on his skull previously.

The couple was also said to enjoy a close relationship with their children and grandchildren, who, reportedly, visits them regularly on weekends – several persons, believed to be the couple’s relatives, were seen cleaning the unit and the adjacent corridor on the evening of 29 July 2023.

The Singapore Police Force confirmed that they were alerted to a case of unnatural death at 10.17a.m, 25 February 2023. A 67-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 70-year-old man was found unconscious.

Investigations are ongoing, but no foul play is suspected.
