When the deceased was found, there were clear signs of decomposition, and it is believed that he has been dead for at least a week or more. Residents whom the evening daily spoke to said that the deceased was last seen two weeks ago.
Reportedly, according to Kumar, a resident and a bus captain who alerted the police of the foul smell emanating from the unit, said that “in the past one year since I began living here [at Block 18], it appears that the unit is occupied by a young man, who appears to be living alone in this unit”.
Another resident, who declined to be named, told the Chinese evening daily that the deceased was previously working at a nearly industrial site, but since the start of the pandemic, he has often been seen at home and only leaves the unit to buy his meals and beers.
Mr Low, a retiree, told Lianhe Wanbao recalled that “the deceased appears to be six feet tall and was a burly individual, and when I saw him in September 2021, I noticed that he had an emaciated frame and seems to have lost plenty of weight.”
“I did ask him about his health and well-being, but due to his heavy accent, I was unable to hear him clearly,” Mr Low added.
The unit was initially occupied by a couple in their 60s and a son who appears to be “close to his 30s”. This family of three, who began living in the unit three years ago, is reportedly from China. However, it is presently unclear where the deceased’s family members are.
After the deceased was loaded onto a police hearse, cleaners from the Town Council conducted a thorough wash outside the deceased’s unit.
