"He had left his wallet and mobile phone at home“: Family appeals for eyewitnesses

An 85-year-old man was found dead in a storm drain opposite Clementi Avenue 6 at 10.20 a.m., 31 December 2023. The deceased, according to Shin Min Daily News, was subsequently identified by a middle-aged woman and an elderly woman, both of whom are believed to be the deceased’s family.

In the article, dated 1 January 2024, it was reported that the deceased was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations did not suggest any foul play, and investigations are ongoing.

It was unclear how the deceased had fallen into the storm drain, and his wife, son and daughter are perplexed how this tragedy had happened.

His son, who was not named, told Shin Min that his father has the habit of heading out for breakfast earlier than the rest of the family. On the day of the incident, the rest of the family were still sound asleep. The deceased son added that his late father was found drowned not far from their flat, along a route he was known to take daily.

On that fateful morning, the deceased was found without his wallet and mobile phone, which was extremely puzzling to his family. They wondered why he was out for breakfast without his wallet. The bicycle that he usually used to move around was also found parked at the void deck.

The deceased reportedly was experiencing discomfort several weeks ago, and he was on medication for his cough. Further, he was known to have prior heart issues and was a stroke patient.

The family is presently awaiting the findings from the autopsy and appeals for any eyewitness who might have seen the deceased prior to his death on New Year Eve’ morning.
