"MC King": Jimmy Nah 蓝钦喜 (d. 4 January 2008)

Sixteen years ago, on this day, we lost a local comedic talent in Jimmy Nah 蓝钦喜. More popularly known as MC King. He had experienced breathing difficulties at home after accompanying his mother to the clinic and had seemed perfectly alright then.

He was sent to Tan Tock Seng hospital where he died. It was not known whether he had suffered from any health problems, but the cause of death, according to his death certificate, was attributed to heart and lung failure.

Jack Neo, who had worked with Mr Nah on several productions, was understandably shocked when told of his death. He had acted in a couple of local movies, including Neo’s “Just Follow Law”, “I Not Stupid” and “Homerun”, as well as a number of local drama serials.

Nah was a graduate from the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation’s 9th drama training course in 1989 and joined the local entertainment industry a year later. He earned his nickname “MC King” after playing a character who was perennially on medical leave.

But in real life, he was nothing like his malingering on-screen persona. Prior to being an actor, comedian and radio personality, he worked in a supermarket and a crew-chief at Delifrance.

All his life, Nah had to work very hard as he came from a poor family. He worked long hours during his school holidays so that he can buy his textbooks and pay for his school fees.

This upbringing stood him in good stead when he began to take on comedic roles, as acting requires an in-depth study of characters, having an appreciation of life’s nuances and complexities.

Nah was a hardworking and humble person, well-liked by his friends and colleagues. He was a reliable and constant source of motivation to the people in his life. He was also known to be very filial to his widow mother and supportive to his siblings.

A good friend with a zeal for life.

His was a life cut short. Nah was 40 when his life came to an abrupt end.

Sixteen years on, his kindness, manners, laughter and his pursuit of the artistic craft are still well-remembered by the many who had been fortunate enough to have crossed his path.
