"Kind and generous with his help": Goh Chiew Huat, 67, Shun Li Yong Tau Fu

“Kind and generous with his help”. This was how the late Goh Chiew Huat (吴秋发) was described by the people who knew him best – stallholders at Block 115 Bukit Merah View Market and Food Centre and his neighbours.

“He would never say no in helping us to repair our electronic items”, says Mdm Lee, a stallholder at the market. In fact, before his trip to Batam, he had promised another stallholder that he would help to repair his fridge upon his return.

One of his neighbour, Mdm Koh, 80, described him as kind; she said that the late Mr Goh was always willing to help, such as fixing the light bulbs, water hose in his flat.

Shin Min Daily News reported that, according to his wife, Mdm Goh, the purpose of their trip to Batam on Tuesday (Feb 21) was to purchase spare electronic parts on behalf of the stallholders at the market and food centre, and not for sightseeing purposes.

According to members of the Bukit Merah View Market Association, Mr Tan, Mr Pek and others, the late Mr Goh and his wife made their way to Batam after closing their stall on the early morning of Feb 20, where he was expected to stay for a day.

Mr Goh and his wife returned to Singapore on Feb 21. He was seen at the pier in a seated position and was able to communicate with others. But he had by then expressed some discomfort and was awaiting the arrival of an ambulance to take him to the hospital.

According to his wife, Mr Goh had complained about intestinal pain on the ferry ride back from Batam, and by the time they arrived in Singapore, staff at the port had arranged for an ambulance to take him to the hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Mdm Goh subsequently returned home after her husband’s surgery, only to be informed on Wednesday morning (Feb 22, 4am) that her husband had passed away. He was 67.

She is presently seeing to the funeral arrangements of her husband. The late Mr Goh’s wake will be held at the pavilion at Block 118 Bukit Merah View. The Gohs has no children.

In these difficult times for Mdm Goh, the Bukit Merah View Market Association has pledged to render support to Mdm Goh after the funeral. They will also support her during this time of mourning.

Death Kopitiam Singapore understands that Mr Goh Chiew Huat’s funeral and cremation will take place on Sunday afternoon (Feb 26, 2.20pm) at Mandai Crematorium Hall 02.

Mr Goh, thank you for the savoury Yong Tau Fu and the wonderful memories. Supper in Singapore will never be the same without you. Rest well, Mr Goh. We will miss you!
