A man, Chen Da Qian, 86, was found dead in the kitchen of a rental flat at Block 32, Bendemeer Road on the morning (9am) on Oct 19.
Mr Wu, a photographer and Chen’s friend of 30 years, told Lianhe Wanbao
that he was notified by a Lions Befrienders’ staff on Oct 18 that they were unable to reach Chen on his phone.
Wu visited his unit at 11pm on the same day and found that the lights in his unit were still on. He said, “No one responded to my knocks on the door, and just in case that he had lost his way whilst coming home, I went downstairs and searched a few rounds for him.”
The following morning, Wu together with a Lions Befrienders’ staff returned to Chen’s unit and called the police. With the assistance of the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), they opened the door to his unit, and found him lying in his kitchen.
Wu told the media that Chen’s last used his phone on Oct 16, and he believed that he has been dead for at least three days.
Mdm Wang, 74, a neighbour who spoke to Lianhe Wanbao, said that she has not seen Chen leaving his flat to buy breakfast for the past three to four days. Another neighbour of his, Mr Goh, 80, informed the media that he remembered hearing the phone ringing in his unit “two days ago”, but it was not answered.
The police confirmed that they are aware of a case of unnatural death at Block 32 Bendemeer Road on 19 October 2021. An 86-year old male deceased was found lying in a rental unit. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigations are ongoing.
Wu told Lianhe Wanbao
that in his younger days, Chen had worked as a chef. Subsequently, he learned divination and fortune-telling from a master in Malaysia and started practising his craft at temples and the local market.
Chen, according to Wu, has a brother and sister, both of whom had migrated to Australia. They are presently too old and physically weak to travel, but whenever Chen needs any money, she will remit it over to him. Upon hearing of her brother’s death, she was grief-stricken but due to her circumstances, she has left the funeral arrangements in Wu’s good hands.
